《 武藝》(2025) combines two martial arts-inspired pieces of mine:《 太極》 and 《 詠春》.
《 太極》(2023) takes inspiration from the ancient Chinese martial art of Tai Chi. I was particularly entranced by Tai Chi's slow, deliberate movements and its focus on creating "flow"——elements that I aimed to capture in the music. Also central to Tai Chi is the concept of "yin-yang" ( 陰陽) , or "light/dark": opposing but interconnected forces present in the universe.
《 詠春》(2024), on the other hand, takes inspiration from the energetic martial art of Wing Chun, popularized by the Ip Man movies starring Donnie Yen in the 201 0s to 2020s. Wing Chun focuses much more on absorbing one's opponent's energy and reflecting it back, and its punches and kicks are sharp and precise.
《 武藝》,《 太極》, and 《 詠春》were all commissioned by my good friends, the Diocesan Choral Society; Ronnie Kay-yen Cheng, conductor.

太極者， 無極而生， 動靜之機， 陰陽之母。
四正: 掤、 捋、 擠、 按
四隅: 採、 挒、 肘、 靠
五行: 進、 退、 顧、 盼、 中定
詠春絕技， 源於少林。
招無虎鶴， 法無五行。
不行心意， 只用精神。
來留去送， 甩手直沖。
以攻為守， 以守為攻。
力由地起， 拳由心發。
追形接打， 變化無窮。
三樁三拳， 步法身全。
地腳梅花， 木人紅船。
怕打終打， 貪打防空。
